The XIV annual Martin Luther King Memorial Day Rabbit Hunt was a success, more or less.
In attendance were guests, Troy, Sebastian, Clay, Keith, Brannon, and Middle Boy, along with EARRH&SESC members, Brag, Plunker and, rimfire
The first race of the day started shortly after the dogs, Samuel P Thumbsucker, Teddy NoPass, Jeremiah, Penny Sue, and Debra Kay, were released from the box. And went on, and went on, and went on and,…… The Rabbit was finally shot by Middle Boy a hour and forty five minutes into the race. From the size of the hole in him, I would say the rabbit either tripped over his tongue or pulled a hammy, at MB’s feet.
Middle Boy then spent the next couple of hours showing that he is in fact related to me as he missed time after time while Sebastian killed Our second rabbit.
Eventually after lunch, Middle Boy started blaming the gun and swapped over to another one. He promptly killed his second rabbit. Then spent the rest of the day missing. Nope, not the gun, genetics.
We had a good lunch as usual. Plunker supplied the Brunswick stew and I brought along four pounds of link. Two Cajun and one medium made by Dean Wilson Farm Processors where Plunker and I get our cows and hogs butchered and one pound of Cheese and Pepper link from Capps Sausage near Rabbit Run. Clay and his dad cut out after lunch. Clay was telling us he had a date to take his gf deer hunting. We asked why he didn’t bring her to the rabbit hunt. Clay told us he learned at the Martin Luther King Memorial Day Rabbit Hunt XIII when Dylan brought his gf that it would be best to avoid that type of hazing. So, we had a go at him and without any women around to temper our words, well…..
He showed me a picture of her on his phone and I have to say she was very pretty, but I think I had seen her before in those pictures that you get when you buy a picture frame or a new wallet. tic
Late in the day, finally saw a rabbit. He came straight up a steep hill at warp speed after dodging shot from two other hunters. As soon as I pulled the trigger, I knew I had shot over him. I should have been aiming at the dirt in front of him. I swung the Yildiz as he made a right turn and pulled the trigger again just as he stopped. I blew up a bunch of leaves in front of him. He took off again where Middle Boy showed that he was truly related to me as he missed again before Brannon took him out
We were walking out and Middle Boy was talking about taking the dogs into the woods parralel to the road. Brag said there was no need. We would jump and he would head straight down into the tangled thickets below. Finally about a hundred yards from the trucks, Brag said “you know, maybe we should”. The hunters and dogs took off and promptly jumped. The rabbit ran straight out to the road where Brag was waiting.
The Rabbit Journal Pack ran well
Middle Boy, despite all odds ended high man with 2
rimfire I really don’t want to talk about it
